Maryfield is an imposing Gothic style, Grade II * listed detached house situated in a rural setting surrounded by the National Trust Estate of Athony House and close to the outstanding south east Cornwall coast with the famous fishing villages of Looe and Polperro nearby and the renowned beach at Whitsand Bay and classic Cornish seaside villages of Kingsand and Cawsand. The House is very spacious and perfectly suited for a combined family holiday or for a weekend reunion of friends.

The Location

Maryfield House lies at the end of a picturesqe lane which it shares with the village church. The property is 2 miles west of Torpoint and adjacent to Antony House which is run by the National Trust. Access travelling west on A38 is good via Plymouth and the Torpoint Ferry. The coast at Whitsand Bay is a 2 mile drive to the south.


The History

The House was originally built as a school in 1847. This was to commemorate the birth of the first child to Mr & Mrs Pole Carew, owners of the neighbouring Antony House. The architect William White, who also designed the church next door, fashioned Maryfield into a Gothic style vicarage. Maryfield was acquired by the current owners 3 years ago and has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment programme.

The Accommodation

The accommodation sleeps up to a maximum of 15 guests and is better suited to a maximum of 10 adults.

Ground Floor:
  1. Entrance hall with original patterned terracotta tiled floor.
  2. Sitting room with Gothic style stone mullion windows and stone fireplace.
  3. Second reception room.
  4. Library.
  5. Dining room with mullion windows, exposed stone wall, tapestries and stone fireplace.
  6. Cloakroom with wc.
  7. Large kitchen with 4 oven Aga, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave and breakfast table.
  8. Utility room with washer and dryer, additional fridge and freezer.
  9. Shower room with wc and wash hand basin.
  10. Children's snug with Plasma TV, DVD, and wood burner.
  11. Games room.


Secondary staircase to upper ground level:
  1. 1 twin bedroom with 3' beds linked to.
  2. 1 double bedroom with 5' double.
  3. Bathroom.


Main staircase to:
  1. Master bedroom with 5' bed and en-suite bathroom with separate shower.
  2. Double bedroom with 5' bed and en-suite bathroom with shower over bath.
  3. Bathroom with shower and bath.
  4. wc.
  5. Twin bedroom with 3' single beds.
  6. Double bedroom with 6' zip 'n'link bedroom which can convert to 2 singles.


Second floor:
  1. Bedroom with a 6' zip 'n'link and a 3' single. If required the bedroom can be set up with 3 single beds for occupation by children.
  2. Bathroom with shower over bath.


The Grounds:

The grounds comprise a total area of 3 acres, mainly to the front and side of the property and including 2 paddocks. The garden to the front is laid to lawn. To the side are several terraces including one with an outdoor heated swimming pool (7m x 3m) and another with a barbecue. The pool is gated and is open between 1st June and 30th September. Parking is to both the front and rear of the property for numerous vehicles.

  7. Extensive sailing, power boating and additional watersports in and around Plymouth sound.

  10. Horseriding, walking, sea and fresh water fishing all available both locally and within Dartmoor National Park.
Pubs, Restaurants and Local Suppliers
  1. Nearest local pub within ten minutes walk into Wilcove is the Wilcove Inn located on the banks of the Tamar Estuary.
  2. Best local Pub is at St John, the St John Inn, five minutes by car for great pub food and local ales.
  3. The Whitsand Bay Hotel is ten minutes by car overlooking the sea at Portwrinkle serving excellent value and quality meals daily, great for the kids and fantastic for sunday lunch.
  4. Also within ten minutes by car is the Finnygook Inn at Crafthole, great traditional pub with local live music most Fridays.
  5. A wonderful meal and pint is available at the Edgcombe Arms about fifteen minutes by car in Creymll, located close to the Mount Edgcombe Estate.
  6. Route 38 American Diner at Trerulefoot roundabout, about ten minutes drive, for the best breakast in South East Cornwall.
  7. RG Seafoods supplies from Plymouth fish auctions on a daily basis amazing value seafood either delivered or available from their store in Torpoint.
  8. Paul Bray and sons provides meat and poultry again from the local area, delivered to the house or from their store in Tideford on the A38, their rib of beef cooked in the AGA is the best ever.

Restrictions

  1. Sorry no smokers.
  2. Minimum let over a weekend is 2 nights and 3 nights for Bank Holidays and between 5th July and 5th September 2008
  3. Minimum let at Christmas and New Year is 5 nights.
  4. Lets of 1 night are accepted for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights.
