The Location
Loyton lies amid rolling agricultural countryside crossed by a network of secluded leafy lanes, just 25 miles from the cathedral town of Exeter, maritime Barnstaple and Somerset’s county town, Taunton. Offering timeless country views, the Lodge is set on a working estate farm on the edge of Exmoor, within easy reach of open moors, the north Devon and Somerset coastline and picturesque local villages like Dulverton and Bampton.
The History
Alick and Sally Barnes and their two children moved to Loyton in the 1960s and ran a large dairy herd on this 300 acre estate until 1987. During this time the couple developed a reputation for corporate entertaining centred round clay pigeon shooting. They converted the Great Barn into a traditional dining room, complete with roaring log fire and vast pine table and by combining gourmet menus, fresh local ingredients and fine wines, assured their guests an authentic country sporting experience. In 2003, in close collaboration with their daughter Isobel, they converted the remaining barns to create accommodation for an already thriving shooting season and for special events, weddings and house parties.
