The Location
The property is situated at the end of a gated drive in Churchtown, a residential area on the outskirts of the elegant Georgian resort of Southport on the Lancashire coast. The Hall lies in close proximity to the Town’s famous Botanical Gardens. At the bottom of the drive, a minute’s walk away there are two pubs and a choice of local shops.
The History
Meols Hall has stood on this site since the early reign of King John in the 12th Century. Before the Norman Conquest the Manor of North Meols was held by the five Thanes, thought to have been descendants of Odda, the original Norse Settler among the “mels or sandhills” of the Lancashire coast. Since the 12 th century the Hall has remained within the Hesketh family through 27 generations to the present day, albeit sometimes through the female line.
