The Location
Youlston Park nestles in a fold of the rolling North Devon hills between the sea and Exmoor. The House lies at the end of a 1/2 mile long tree lined private drive on the edge of a small village, 4 miles north of Barnstaple. Its estate comprises 158 acres of gardens and paddocks over which guests have unrestricted access.
The History
To date the most influential custodians of Youlston Park were the Chichester family who also owned Arlington Court, located 5 miles away and now run by the National Trust. The Chichesters owned Youlston for many centuries following the marriage in the 1490’s of John Chichester to Margaret Beaumont, heiress of Youlston. Miss Beaumont’s family had lived there since the 12th century. The last alterations of any note were made by the 5th baronet during the Georgian period at the end of the 17th century. As High Sheriff of Devon it was considered important to be able to entertain in extravagant style which accounts for the abundance of fireplaces and the Venetian staircase.
